Meghan Markle - Feminist Warrior Princess

On May 19th, the world celebrated another dose of Royal fever as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry tied the knot. It’s fair to say that this was not an average royal wedding. Behind the flawless gown, tiara and jewels was a pretty damn inspiring lady who is out to change the world.

Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, is a self-confessed feminist warrior who has devoted a fair bit of time to numerous social justice initiatives. Her brand new royal biography outlines that:

“Aged 11 she successfully campaigned for a company to alter their television advert that had used sexist language to sell washing-up liquid. Her Royal Highness also volunteered at a soup kitchen in Skid Row, Los Angeles from the age of 13-17. She continued to volunteer at the soup kitchen when she would return home to Los Angeles until the age of 22. These early experiences helped to shape her lifelong commitment to causes such as social justice and women's empowerment.”

Markle became an Ambassador for World Vision in 2016. On her second trip with the organisation, she visited India in the hope of bringing a greater awareness to girls' lack of access to education in developing communities.

In the slums of Mumbai, The Duchess focused particularly on the incredible work of the Myna Mahila Foundation who empower women through access to menstrual hygiene products and employment opportunities. Greatly affected by what she saw, Meghan wrote an op-ed for Time Magazine about the taboo of menstrual health management and its long term affect on girls’ education.

“To remedy this problem, young girls need MHM, access to toilets, and at a most basic level, sanitary pads.” – Meghan Markle 2017

Meghan and Harry provided more funds for the foundation as part of their philanthropic donations on their wedding day.

Now that’s definitely something to celebrate!
