Ghosts of Menarche, 2021 - Jan Brown (she/her)
Acrylic on canvas 90 x 120 cm
Ghosts of Menarche refers to how advertising images designed to promote menstruation products have been instrumental in shaping stigma and serve to silence open acceptance of a natural biological process.
Jan Brown is a studio-based artist working in Mount Barker in South Australia. Jan's art practice can range from exploring everyday objects to political issues such as a concern with the exploration of opposites when two beliefs that contradict each other are at play. Known as cognitive dissonance, Jan attempts to align and resolve these differences in the art marking process.
Thank you to Adelaide Central School of Art who have approved a Graduate Support Grant for the framing of this painting.
