Should I make the switch to organic tampons?
Have you ever thought about what is actually in the tampons you are using every month? Recent discussions have been sparked around the lack of regulation to disclose the ingredients that make up tampons. Chemicals contained within synthetic tampons include polyethylene, polypropylene, rayon, bleach and cotton that is grown using pesticides. Tampons are placed inside one of the most sensitive areas of the body - the vulva area is 10 times more permeable than other areas of our body. Considering the average menstruator will use tampons 11,500 times in their lives, understanding what tampons are made of is super important.
This is where it’s important to understand the difference between conventional and organic cotton tampons. Here’s the lowdown on the difference….
Conventional tampons often contain synthetic fibres, rayon, fragrances and pesticides. But what does this actually mean for your body? The vaginal canal has mucus membranes that absorb chemicals at a rate 10 times higher than what is absorbed when swallowed. The act of inserting a tampon can cause micro-tears in the wall of the vagina, meaning the mucous membranes can absorb any chemicals present in the tampons, which then enter your bloodstream. Conventional tampons will typically contain synthetic fibres and fragrances which can irritate the mucous membranes in the vagina and cause an imbalance in vaginal bacteria which can lead to infections. The cotton used in conventional tampons has usually been sprayed with pesticides and chemicals to ensure the cotton looks ‘clean’ and as white as possible. It is these chemicals that can make their way into your bloodstream.
Making the switch to organic tampons reduces your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.
TABOOs organic cotton tampons have been made without the use of chemical pesticides, insecticides or fertilisers. There are also many more environmental benefits to organic cotton when comparing conventional cotton which have more synthetic materials that take much longer to breakdown!
