Quiet Warrior, 2021 - Yoko Lowe (she/her)
Mixed media (egg tempera and oil paint on panel), 81 x 110 cm
The history of female menstruation is as old and as long as the history of the human race itself, passed down from mother to daughter through the ages. I aim to portray these women, who through history have persevered and produced succeeding generations, as quiet warriors. I hope this image gives courage to women everywhere who must carry the burden of menstruation to take the opportunity to break through the taboo which endures to this day.
Born and raised in Japan, Yoko Lowe is a visual artist based in Brisbane, focussing on the relationship between the physical movement of our bodies and images of feelings as a result of the art making process.
